Satamatics gains new status

Posted: 29 October 2007

New status will allow the TAM-120 tracking unit to be deployed in hazardous environments

Satamatics reported that its TAM-120 tracking product has been awarded Class 1, Division 2 status.

This allows it to operate in potentially explosive environments, enabling the unit to be deployed in a wider range of applications and environments.

Part of the United States hazardous areas classification system, Class 1 Division 2 is defined as a location in which volatile flammable liquids and gases are handled but where they are confined, so that ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapours or liquids are not likely to exist under normal operating conditions.

Class 1, Division 2 status is difficult to obtain and products applying for such status must undergo rigorous testing.

The certification guarantees the intrinsic safety of the TAM-120 when in hazardous environments as it ensures that the electrical and thermal energy in the system will always be low enough that ignition inside the explosive atmosphere cannot occur.

The TAM-120 tracking and monitoring product provides global tracking and sensor monitoring for fixed and mobile assets – such as trailers, containers, tanks and railcars – without the need for an external power source. Depending on battery size, the integral battery will provide up to 10 years of maintenance free operation.

The TAM-120 is designed to operate with the Rosemount, or similar, low power transducers and is ideal for tank monitoring applications.

"The Tam-120 gaining Class 1, Division 2 status is significant because it will allow industry sectors such as oil and gas to utilise the product and gain previously unobtainable levels of tracking and monitoring capabilities for their valuable assets," said Peter Chisholm of Satamatics.

The TAM-120 is expected to make a huge difference to companies wishing to track and monitor assets containing hazardous materials.
