Sybase and Geomatic Technologies provide mobile solutions

Posted: 24 November 2006

Sybase, Inc. reported that Geomatic Technologies Pty Ltd has joined the Sybase Business Solutions Alliance (BSA) with Sybase Australia Pty Limited (Sybase) to deliver its GT Field Mobile Computing suite of field workforce management and asset data capture solutions on the high-performance Sybase Afaria mobile platform.

Headquartered in Melbourne, with a new office in Brisbane and operating around the country, Geomatic Technologies (GT) is Australia’s leading provider of location based business intelligence solutions.

GT’s Field Mobile Computing solution is used by some of Australia’s largest utilities and it recently won the Queensland Spatial Excellence Award for Industry and Entrepreneurship.

The GT FMC solution proved invaluable in the wake of Cyclone Larry, which hit North Queensland in March 2006. With detailed information and digital mapping of all of the power poles captured in the system, GT customer Ergon Energy's team of 400 field inspectors were able to accurately crosscheck assets on the ground with details in the centralised asset management system database.

GT selected Sybase as the key mobility component of its GT FMC suite due to the ease of development, deployment and scalability offered by Sybase’s Afaria technology.

"After evaluating several solutions, we found Afaria provided us with the out of-the-box functionality and flexibility to extend the GT FMC solution beyond its current use, offering utility companies like Ergon Energy more advanced capabilities such as document management, software deployment, and the graphical presentation of information for reporting purposes,” said Adrian Lewis, Director of Geomatic Technologies.

“Sybase is pleased to be partnering with GT to further enhance the Afaria solutions suite, said Steve Dolan, Director Channels & Alliances, Sybase Australia & New Zealand.

“Their development of the FMC suite showcases the way in which mobility technologies can be applied to mission-critical applications. Afaria can significantly enhance the value proposition of this new generation of applications targeting the mobile workforce,” he said.
