Roxar Tempest for Vietnam

Posted: 26 June 2006

Roxar is to provide its flagship reservoir simulation solution, Tempest to Hoan Vu Joint Operating Company and Hoang Long Joint Operating Company – both in Vietnam.

The deals are the first commercial contracts for Tempest in Vietnam and will allow Hoan Vu’s and Hoang Long’s geologists and reservoir engineers to make informed decisions relating to the structure, type and economic potential of the fields they are operating to ensure production is maximized.

These fields are Vietnam’s offshore blocks 9-2 (operated by Hoan Vu) and 16-1 (operated by Hoang Long).

Tempest will enable both operating companies to realize their goals of reduced cycle time for reservoir modeling and quantifying uncertainty to ensure a greater degree of accuracy in their models.

Roxar’s Tempest software suite is a robust, fast, memory efficient reservoir simulation tool for reservoir engineers making field development and reservoir management decisions.

Tempest comes with state of the art modeling and simulation capabilities, including the ability to simulate a wide range of physical processes within one program, such as black oil, compositional, dual porosity, steam, coal bed methane and polymer injection.

The Hoan Vu Joint Operating Company consists of PetroVietnam Exploration & Production Company with a 50 per cent share, SOCO Vietnam Limited with a 25 per cent share and PTTEP Hoan Vu Company Limited with a 25 per cent share. The operating company was set up to operate Vietnam’s offshore block 9-2.

The Hoang Long Joint Operating Company is owned by PetroVietnam Exploration & Production Company (41 per cent), SOCO Vietnam Limited (28.5 per cent), PTTEP Hoang Long Company Limited (28.5 per cent) and OPECO (2 per cent).

The operating company is developing block 16-1 in the Cuu Long basin.

"We are delighted to be announcing our first commercial sale of Tempest in Vietnam today. Vietnam is one of the fastest growing oil and gas producers in South East Asia with the country’s estimated resources currently standing at 6.5 to 8.5 billion barrels of oil and 75-100 trillion cubic feet of gas." said Roxar CEO, Sandy Esslemont

"With much of its production coming from fractured, offshore basement reservoirs, it is essential that accurate and robust models are fully simulated to reduce risk and uncertainty.

"With Tempest, Hoan Vu JOC and Hoang Long JOC will be able to look forward to a greater understanding of their reservoirs and maximized reservoir performance for years to come."

As well as supplying Tempest, Roxar is also proposing a detailed training program to provide both operating companies with the necessary skills to make best use of Tempest.

The focus of the training will be to develop an increased awareness of the importance of incorporating all data when constructing geological and simulation models, and the need to adopt a multi-disciplinary approach.

Future potential areas of collaboration between Roxar and Hoan Vu JOC and Hoang Long JOC include the adoption of Roxar’s industry leading reservoir modeling solution, IRAP RMS, and, in particular the module RMSFracPerm, an integrated, easy to use package which will enable geologists and reservoir engineers to incorporate fracture modeling into their mainstream 3D modeling and simulation activities.

Recent additional features to Tempest include a unique, new method for modeling naturally fractured reservoirs using a Single Grid Dual Porosity approach that can halve the run time compared to conventional dual porosity models and a Tensor Permeability option which can be used to describe complex heterogeneous reservoir systems.

A new version – Tempest 6.3, which includes parallel processing capabilities, will be launched later this year.

Roxar has a growing customer base throughout Vietnam, including oil and gas giants, BP and PETRONAS Carigali (Vietnam) Ltd., who have incorporated reservoir modeling and flow measurement solutions into their Vietnamese reservoir operations; the Japan Vietnam Petroleum Company (JVPC), who use the Roxar Multiphase meter, the Roxar Watercut meter and the Roxar Sand monitor for their Rang Dong project; and PetroVietnam, who have utilized IRAP RMS.

Roxar is also closely working with the Vietnam Petroleum Institute.

In May 2005, Roxar opened a new office in Ho Chi Minh City. The office is home to four Vietnamese nationals - all trained in providing sales and technical support on Roxar’s portfolio of products.
