MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) leads with launch of 3.5G
Posted: 21 May 2006
MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) launched the region’s first new high speed 3.5G service.
High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) – also referred to as 3.5G technology - is one of the world’s fastest wireless broadband access technology using mobile phones and Data Connect cards.
It dramatically increases the speed of down linking data to five times that of existing 3G networks, and 15 times faster than GPRS networks.
MTC Vodafone (Bahrain)’s launch of the new service puts the Kingdom among the first countries in the world to have 3.5G technology, which, due to the massively increased speed, enhances the appeal of mobile technology for internet access and downloading of high resolution movies, video, interactive games and multimedia music tracks.
MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain)’s HSDPA technology (3.5 G) further enhances the customers’ experience of data and expands the range of ‘WoW’ services. The world’s fastest data downlink speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps are possible through HSDPA access, with the current maximum being 1.8 Mbps.
The evolution of 3.5G technology gives MTC Vodafone (Bahrain)’s mobile data customers convenient wireless internet access anywhere, any time. Used with a PC or laptop, the technology presents a real alternative internet service to the current conventional fixed dial-up, low speed ADSL and high speed ADSL.
“This is another regional first in our endeavor to ensure that MTC Group offers the enhanced speed, quality and variety that our customers are looking for from a broadband service,” said Dr. Saad Al Barrak, Deputy Chairman & Managing Director of MTC Group and Chief Executive Officer of MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain).
“We were the first in the region to commercially offer EDGE and 3G services, and now we are the first in the region to commercially offer the state-of-the-art HSDPA service in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and this will be shortly followed in Kuwait,” he added.
As an add-on to the 3G network the high speed data access service provided by HSDPA technology (3.5G) is considered by many industry analysts to be the technology that is most likely to increase 3G take-up globally because it makes data services much faster and more user-friendly.
“The launch of HSDPA (3.5G) further reaffirms MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain)’s innovation leadership by providing our customers the mobile technology industry’s very latest in global state-of-the-art technology services and our successful integration with Bahrain Internet Exchange (BIX) enhances our customers’ connectivity to the internet world and ensures smooth access,” said Mahmoud Hashish, the Chief Operating Officer at MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain).
“MTC-Vodafone customers using 3G services will benefit from significantly faster download speeds and capacity for all manner of internet browsing and streamed content. MTC-Vodafone is now among the first telecom operators in the world to provide high-speed multimedia mobile services beyond 3rd generation,” he continued.
Elaborating on MTC-Vodafone’s HSDPA offering, Mr. Ismail Fikree, Chief Technology Officer at MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) said, “MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) is the innovation hub for the MTC Group and today’s achievement has underlined this.”
“HSDPA (3.5G) is an upgrade to MTC-Vodafone’s existing 3G network infrastructure. The HSDPA roll-out started in the Seef District and we plan to provide HSDPA coverage throughout the Kingdom by the end of July 2006,” Mr. Fikree added.
