Brazil Energy Program to be discussed in New York

Posted: 17 June 2008

Global climate changes, hikes in crude-oil prices, and food supply concerns are the dominating themes of almost every business discussion today.

Underlying these debates are the decisions related to the energy sector, which have profound implications on a nation's development, trade, and international relations.

To analyze the present scenario and discuss business and investment opportunities in the field, the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce will convene leaders in the sector for the Brazil Energy Summit on June 23rd.

The event will take place at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.

Featured speakers include David Neeleman, Founder and CEO of Azul Brazilian Airlines, who is turning his attention to clean fuel for his recently launched carrier; and Luciano Coutinho, President of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), the financial institution responsible for the funding of major infrastructure projects in the area.

This week, crude-oil soared to a record high, exceeding $131 per barrel. Data released by the US government shows that the country's crude oil stockpiles fell by 5.3 million barrels last week

The state oil company Petrobras has recently announced a historical oil finding that could potentially turn the country into a major exporter of the commodity. To speak about the oil and gas sector, the Chamber has convened the most noted players in the field: Antonio Eduardo Castro, Executive Manager of Gas & Energy at Petrobras, and Francisco Gros, Vice-Chairman of OGX Petróleo e Gás Participações S.A.

The discussion will also look at traditional sources of energy including hydroelectric and electric power, areas that have attracted attention in Brazil due to the government's incentive plan for infrastructure projects -- the PAC.

The panel of speakers will include Henrique Valladares, Director of the construction giant Odebrecht, which integrates the consortium that will develop a $7.4 billion power plant on the Amazon's Madeira River.

Plinio Nastari, President of Datagro, will moderate the discussion about biofuels and biodiesel with industry leaders Alan Boyce, President of Adecoagro (the largest US investor in biofuels); Marcelo Brito, Commercial Director of Agropalma (a unique biodiesel project in the Amazon); Paulo Diniz, CFO of COSAN, the world's largest producer of ethanol; and Joel Velasco, Chief Representative of Unica, the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association.
