The challenges and opportunities the refining and petrochemical industries in the Middle East faces as it enters its next phase of expansion will fall under the spotlight at the conference opening session of the Middle East International Refining and Petrochemicals Conference and Exhibition (Middle East Petrotech 2008) on 25 May 2008 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel Bahrain.

A panel of high ranking industry figures will deliver their own perspective on this year’s conference theme Refining/Petrochemical Integration: The Way for Future Growth, to an audience of over 1,000 downstream oil and gas professionals.

Following an address by Mohammed Ahmad Husain, Petrotech 2008 Conference Committee Chairman and Deputy Chairman and Deputy Managing Director, Planning & Gas, Kuwait Oil Company, the speakers include H.E. Some 80 plus cutting edge technical presentations and 12 executive keynote speaker sessions will follow over the subsequent three days of the conference at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre, exploring issues relating to synergies between the refining and petrochemical sectors; and the technology, management, equipment, safety, health and environment, manufacturing and economy of refining and petrochemicals.

Keynote speakers include Robert Hutchinson, Vice President Chemicals, ExxonMobil Saudi Arabia; Maurice Bannayan, Senior Vice President, Reliance Industries Limited; Khalid G. Al-Buainain, Senior Vice President, RM&I, Saudi Aramco; Maha Mulla Hussain, Managing Director, Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) Kuwait; Bill Spence, Vice President CO2, Shell Downstream Services International B.V.; Abdulkarim Al-Sayed, Chief Executive Officer, BAPCO; Michael R. "With a highly technical conference programme, senior keynote speakers and an exhibition of international significance, Petrotech 2008 will help ensure that downstream professionals in the Gulf and throughout the Middle East remain at the forefront of the latest developments in our industry," said Mohammed Ahmad Husain.

The associated exhibition of refining and petrochemicals products and services will be inaugurated in a separate ceremony under the patronage of His Highness the Prime Minister of Bahrain Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa on Monday 26 May 2008 at the exhibition centre.

A total of 156 exhibitors from 22 countries will be in attendance at Petrotech 2008, including such major participants as the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), BANAGAS, GPIC, ExxonMobil, Dow Chemical Company, Foster Wheeler, JGC Corporation, Kuwait National Petroleum Corporation (KNPC), Qatar Petroleum, Saudi Aramco, UOP, Yokogawa and Xenel in addition to a dedicated UK pavilion and smaller specialist suppliers and distributors.

Since its inauguration in 1996, the Middle East Petrotech series has established itself as a key industry forum for these highly significant sectors of the region’s economy.

In 2006, a record total of 4,990 trade visitors and conference delegates attended the event, marking a 9 per cent increase over Middle East Petrotech 2003. The 2008 exhibition has increased by over 25 per cent in size over the 2006 event.
