Gastech 2008

Posted: 11 January 2008

Gastech 2008 is being staged in Bangkok, Thailand at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) 10-13 March 2008.

The speakers in the dynamic conference have been confirmed; the exhibition is larger than ever; the social events have been meticulously planned; and the registrations are flooding in from all over the world.

"Gastech 2008 in Bangkok has reached a new pinnacle of success," said event director, Tony Stephenson of dmg world media (uk) ltd.

"It is a very special event in so many ways. This year we are extremely honoured to have a royal opening. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will officially open the conference on Monday 10 March, and will then tour the exhibition. At over 12,200m2 and with up to 300 exhibiting companies from all over the world, this is some seventy per cent larger than the 22nd Gastech held in Abu Dhabi in December 2006 – which held the previous record for the largest Gastech ever.

"Events can only reflect the industries they serve, and Gastech’s phenomenal growth mirrors what is going on in the LNG, LPG and natural gas industries. We are proud to be part of this expanding and vibrant industry. Holding Gastech in Bangkok has proved to be a considerable draw, and we would like to thank our hosts, the PTT Group, for their enthusiasm and support for the show, it has been an honour and pleasure to work with them."

compelling conference programme
The Gastech Programme Advisory Committee (PAC) co-chaired by Chris Clucas, Director, Dorchester Maritime LNG Ltd and Paul Young, Chief Marketing Officer, Exmar N.V. had a busy time sifting through the record 268 abstracts submitted for this year’s conference. The programme with its highly compelling and topical keynote addresses and packed commercial, technical and specialty streams, is now confirmed and can be found on the Gastech website at www.gastech.co.uk.

Keynote speakers include Dr Pornchai Rujiprapa, Permanent Secretary of Energy & Chairman of the Directors, PTT Public Company Ltd; Hon. Pehin Dato Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office, Brunei; Prasert Bunsumpun, President, PTT Public Company Ltd; Jim Blackwell, President, Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration & Production Company; Andy Swiger, President, ExxonMobil Gas & Power Marketing Company; Jon Chadwick, Executive Vice President, Asia Pacific, Shell Gas & Power; and Faisal Al-Suwaidi, Chairman and CEO, Qatargas all of whom will be speaking on opening day.

Paul Reed, Group Vice President, BP Global Gas; Martin Houston, President, BG North America; and Dietrich Gerstein, Senior Vice President LNG Supply, E.ON Ruhrgas will deliver keynote addresses on Day 2; and Dr Chitrapongse Kwangsukstith, CEO, Upstream and Gas Business Group, PTT Public Company Ltd, Jean-Marc Hosanski, Senior Vice President LNG Total Gas & Power; and Marcel Kramer, Chairman of the Executive Board & CEO, NV Nederlandse Gasunie are keynote speakers on Day 3.

With well over 120 speakers and chairs taking part in the conference there will be packed and informative sessions on World Gas Supply and Demand, Price And Country Strategy; Alternative Trading Models in the Gas Business; Energy Supply/Demand in Asia and Key Regional Issues; Natural Gas and LNG Projects, Development and Outlook, including Pricing, Finance and Legal Issues all in the Commercial stream.

The Technical stream covers Safety and Training; Natural Gas and LNG Facilities including Storage, Regasificaiton, Floating and Offshore; Application and Utilisation of Gases; and LNG Shipping: Development, Technology, Crewing, Operations and Trends. The Specialty stream encompasses Gas to Liquids – Projects, Products, Markets; Technical Developments; Prestressed Concrete LNG Tanks; and Sustainable Growth in Natural Gas – Technical; and poster sessions will be given by a further ten presenters on both the Tuesday and Wednesday of Gastech.

The Gastech 2008 conference closes with the now-traditional ‘Gastech Perspective’, highlights of the conference handpicked by members of the Programme Advisory Committee (PAC) in a session moderated by PAC co-chairs Paul Young and Chris Clucas.

"As ever, Gastech 2008 will feature a set of presentations that will keep delegates up-to-date with the rapid changes that are happening now in the gas scene," Chris Clucas said.

"We have put together sessions that will inform and update the industry about the latest developments in Gas-to-Liquids (GTL), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), offshore LNG technology and concrete tanks.

"After a long development period, new ship cargo containment systems and propulsion machinery are in operation. We have presentations about in-service experience with new generation membrane systems, gas-burning dual-fuel diesel electric propulsion and the giant Q-flex vessels that use oil bunkers and reliquefy cargo boil-off.

"Safety aspects of gas handling are also well covered, with presentations on both prevention and emergency response planning - plus the importance of training. Ship-to-ship transfer of LNG is now starting to become a commercial reality, and Gastech will feature several presentations on new designs and practical experience."

"With the price of oil approaching $100 per barrel, with the weakening dollar, and the increasing worldwide scramble for energy, we look forward to the views of the numerous keynote speakers at Gastech, which include PTT, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, among others, who undoubtedly will share some of their challenges during this past year," said Paul Young.

"Due to the rapid growth in the LNG industry, some of the planned liquefaction projects have experienced delays, which in turn impact the LNG spot market in terms of available cargo as well as shipping. The keynote speech from Qatargas is not to be missed as well as the papers focusing on the LNG spot markets.

"With rising energy prices, and bottlenecks in new liquefaction projects coming on stream, this past year's focus has shifted to exploring offshore liquefaction in stranded or marginal fields. Gastech will be featuring papers from Chevron, Flex LNG, and Mustang which promise to shed further light on producing LNG in challenging environments. Gastech will also be featuring a wide array of speakers on the subject of offshore and ship-based LNG regasification and ship to ship transfer which were an important feature in 2007.

"NOCs are beginning to flex their muscle in the LNG industry and there will be interesting papers from Qatargas, Petrobras, PTT, and Oman LNG among others. Layered among these presentations will be challenging topics such as – ‘Will Supply Choke LNG Business Growth?’ and ‘What will be the role of IOCs as NOCs move into midstream and downstream’.

"With LNG commodity prices at record levels and with limited supply, the Gastech halls and meeting rooms will be the place to be if one wants to find out if LNG is indeed as viable a fuel for the future as it is promised to be, and how the industry plans to keep it economically viable for emerging countries and consumers. As always the Gastech programme will also be generously including views from our favourite economists, consultants and gurus as well.

"The current buzz in the market has shifted from offshore regasification to the new challenge of offshore liquefaction. Booths to visit for offshore liquefaction will be: Mustang Engineering, Air Products, ABB, Aker Kvaerner, Black & Veatch, Hamworthy, KBR, Linde, Samsung, Technip, among others.

"NOC's are coming on strong across the entire LNG value chain, so for the latest developments visit, Petrobras, Gazprom, NLNG, Petronas, Petronet, and PTT," Young said.

"The ambitious Qatar Gas projects and ships are coming on stream, so be sure to visit Qatar Petroleum and Rasgas, ExxonMobil, Shell, and ConocoPhillips as well as the three shipyards providing the large number of QFlex and QMax vessels - DSME, Samsung, and Hyundai."
