Spotlight on role of ocean technology at Oi06

For the multitude of different professions working within the marine environment, the role of ocean technology in serving society is one that sees it rightfully take its place as one of the world’s highest profile industries. Such a profile requires constant proactive interaction between all the users of the oceans if they are to meet the expectations of the international community.

With the devastating impact of natural hazards fresh in the minds of so many people, the topicality of the world’s largest ocean technology and marine science event – Oceanology International 2006 (OI06) – is beyond compare. With special sessions at OI06 and its related sister show Spill 06 dedicated to subjects including tsunamis, Hurricane Katrina, ocean resource management, security and safety, the agenda-setting conference and exhibition will once again act as the seminal event for the ocean community. You can view the programmes for OI06 and the Spill conference Interspill 2006 now at www.oi06.com and www.spill06.co.uk respectively.

Thousands of key individuals and dozens of organisations from around the world are expected to converge on London next month to attend OI06, which will be held once more at the Exhibition Centre London (ExCeL) in the Docklands, hard by the Thames and the Royal Victoria Dock. Running from March 21-23, the show attracts a wide-ranging audience of leading policy makers, industrialists, government representatives, researchers, directors, managers, scientists, engineers and manufacturers involved in every aspect of the oceanographic community.

Tsunami detection and early warning systems in the spotlight

A special sub-session on tsunamis on Day 1 of OI06 will feature discussion and debate including presentations on tsunami detection and early warning systems, with a keynote speech by Patricio Bernal, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO and Executive Secretary of the IOC (Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission) France.

According to Oi06 conference chairman Dr Richard Spinrad, Assistant Administrator of the NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) for Research, “Oi06 is proving to be a seminal event for the global marine science and technology community. Our conference theme of ‘Technology in Service to Society’ is reflected in the extraordinary diversity and relevance of technical presentations that will range from treatments of natural hazards (including the devastating tsunami and hurricanes we witnessed in the last two years), to resource management, security and safety, and precise navigation and positioning.

“This conference will complement an impressive exhibition, including 569 exhibitors so far, where visitors will be afforded the opportunity to see the leading edge developments in marine sensors, platforms, data acquisition systems, and other technologies. I am excited by the prospects of future developments that will emerge from the guaranteed dynamic nature of this year's Oi06 Exhibition and Conference.”

OI06 A Forum For Cross-Fertilisation Of Ideas

Oi06’s no-fee policy enables visitors to attend sessions from disciplines other than their own, enhancing the cross-fertilisation of ideas between many specialist disciplines. It remains a distinct and respected forum for ocean scientists, engineers, end users and suppliers, researchers and policymakers to present their latest research results, state-of–the-art technologies, future ideas, and innovative concepts to the global ocean community.

According to Nik Rudge, Project Director for show organisers Spearhead Exhibitions Ltd: “Oi06 remains unrivalled in it's ability to gather people from all sectors of the industry spectrum to see and debate the technology and topics that will shape the sector, and above all bring together the various vertical sectors to build a true industry community.”

A Wealth Of Meetings Alongside

There will also be 13 meetings held alongside Oi06, including the GIS Conference, IIDC, ECOR and a presentation forum by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation. Details on these and all the other meetings alongside can be found at: www.oilondon.com/conference/meetings.aspx.

Also being held alongside Oi06 is the Spill 06 event. This will present recent advances in spill technologies, covering marine, coastal and inland sectors, and will be held in conjunction with the Interspill 2006 conference.

There are now just over four weeks until OI06 begins.
