West Mailisu Well plugged and abandoned

Posted: 13 August 2008

Caspian's West Mailisu Well #1 will be plugged and abandoned after defining the western limits of the Mailisu III oilfield.

Although oil shows (minor fluorescence and gas shows) were seen in Bed VII, the absence of porous reservoirs suggested the well was unlikely to be commercial.

The well was drilled to a total depth of 1,026m to test the presence of oil and reservoir quality on the western flank of the Mailisu III structure, some 3km west of Caspian’s first well (see map). The well results have helped in defining areas for future drilling on the Mailisu III field.

After completion of the abandonment of West Mailisu # 1, the upgrade of the Caspian rig will continue in anticipation of completing the arrangement to drill deeper prospects in the southern Fergana Basin, potentially from November 2008.

A smaller, more cost effective contract drill rig is expected to arrive on site in late August/early September. This contract rig will initially be used for drilling the East Mailisu licence and a number of shallow development wells in the Charvak area.

Its first well will be East Mailisu #1. This prospect is a 4 way dip closure newly mapped using two re-interpreted Soviet era 2D seismic lines. Live oil was recorded in core samples from recent Uranium exploration drilling very close to the planned drill site.

The target Beds V and VII are expected to be intersected at a depth of between 585-650 metres.

The small contract rig will provide a cost effective and flexible solution for drilling shallow wells while releasing the Caspian rig for the planned deeper drilling program in the southern Fergana Basin which is currently under negotiation (see June 2008 quarterly report).

The contract rig has a small crew, can be moved quickly between sites and can be located more easily given its smaller footprint. The results of the Mailisu III program are being reviewed in anticipation of development drilling in 2009.

After drilling the East Mailisu well the contract rig will be moved to the Charvak licence, where six shallow exploration core holes previously drilled by Caspian have confirmed oil in Bed III and the overlying Baktria formation (conglomerate) at depths of between 100m to 200m over a strike length of 4km.

An initial campaign of six wells to depths of around 200 metres will aim to test production from these reservoirs.

Some of the planned wells are on trend with existing wells producing at between 5-15 bopd in the adjoining Changyrtash oilfield, highlighting the potential to establish meaningful production with inexpensive high density drilling.
