APIA: Ministers must focus on gas transmission issues
Posted: 7 November 2005
The Australian Pipeline Industry Association (APIA) welcomed comments by Industry Minister, Hon Ian Macfarlane, on the agreement reached regarding electricity regulation.
At the same Ministerial Council on Energy, the nation’s Energy Ministers were unable to reach agreement on the gas transmission regime.
“Clearly Ministers and their bureaucrats have spent much time and energy focussing on legislation to transfer state retail functions to the national regime,” APIA Chief Executive, Ms Cheryl Cartwright, said today.
“Ministers must now fully focus on the challenges of the gas transmission regime. The long-term investment in Australia’s gas transmission infrastructure is dependent on Ministers getting this decision right,” she said.
“Ministers should support the recommendations of the Productivity Commission which, although a compromise for the industry, include a package of measures that will help to provide certainty for infrastructure investors.
“They must avoid introducing so-called light-handed regulation that could impose more onerous requirements on industry.
“If Ministers get the decision wrong on the gas transmission regime, it is the consumers of the future who will suffer the consequences.”
