SPE Aberdeen scoops first ever top award

Posted: 29 October 2005

The Aberdeen section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers has scooped a prestigious award for excellence – the first in its 30 year history.

The section, which has more than 2,000 members, was one of only six out of 160 SPE sections worldwide to win the SPE President’s Award for Section Excellence 2005.

The award was presented recently by SPE President Giovanni Paccaloni to Aberdeen section chairman Alan Dick at the SPE’s annual technical conference and exhibition in Dallas , Texas . Mr Dick is group marketing manager - subsea for leading oilfield service company Expro International Group PLC.

To win the award, the Aberdeen section had to demonstrate excellence in a number of areas including technical dissemination, membership development and community interaction. In particular, the section was praised for its work with students and young engineers, especially the development of its emerging leaders programme.

Mr Dick said: “It was a tremendous honour for our section to receive this award, the first in what has been an illustrious 30 year history. It recognises the outstanding work the section does, both with our members and within the wider community in Aberdeen .”

“One third of our members are less than 35 years old and we place great store in helping young engineers and students develop their careers. In the last 10 years we have distributed around £400,000 in the sponsorship of graduates and assisting school science and technology related projects. Our commitment to encouraging tomorrow’s leading engineers will remain strong.”
