Largest multiphase meter for Statoil’s Norne field

Posted: 27 September 2005

Roxar reported it has supplied a 12” MPFM 1900VI Multiphase Flow Meter to Norwegian oil and gas company, Statoil.

The Multiphase Flow Meter, which was installed earlier this month at Statoil’s Norne field on the Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, is the largest multiphase meter ever to be delivered to the oil and gas industry.

The meter has been installed on a riser tie-in line carrying multiphase production from five separate flow lines from the Stær and Svale satellites.

When production starts up later this year, the meter will monitor the riser production rates for the purpose of allocation among field partners.

The commissioning of the meter will be completed at the arrival of first oil.

The Norne field, off the coast of mid-Norway, was discovered by Statoil in 1991 and has been producing oil since 1997 and gas since 2001.

The field has been one of Statoil’s largest single producers on the Norwegian continental shelf and in 2002, set a production record of over 236,000 barrels of oil per day.

The field is currently producing from nine wells and has a commercial lifespan until at least 2015.

Due to the scaleable technology used for the multiphase measurements, the same accuracy and performance can be achieved with a 12” meter as for normal sized meters.

“Once again, Roxar is responsible for an industry first – this time the largest multiphase meter ever installed,” said Roxar CEO, Sandy Esslemont.

“In today’s competitive global E&P industry, Roxar is acutely aware that quality and speed of information and the need to customize one’s solutions for the individual characteristics of each oil and gas field is essential. Through Roxar’s Multiphase Flow Meter, Statoil will be able to measure multiphase flows in the Norne field in real-time and to a high degree of accuracy.”

Statoil ASA is a major integrated oil and gas company with its head office in Stavanger and business operations in 25 countries. Production of oil and natural gas on the Norwegian continental shelf is the backbone of Statoil’s business as it is the leading producer and trader of gas from Norwegian fields and a key supplier of gas to Europe.

Roxar recently announced a number of high-profile contracts for its Multiphase Flow Meters.

In September 2005, Roxar reported a letter of intent to supply Multiphase Flow Meters to the Akpo Subsea Development, Offshore Nigeria; in May 2005, Roxar won a contract to supply Multiphase Flow Meters to a leading Middle Eastern Client; and in January 2005, Roxar won a bid to supply its meters to the deepwater Rosa oil field off the Angolan coast through FMC Kongsberg with the field operator being Total.
