Aker Kvaerner: Rebuild of Santos fire damaged plant completed

Posted: 1 December 2004

O&G Solutions, a joint venture between Aker Kvaerner Australia Pty Ltd and United KG Pty Ltd has worked with Santos to successfully complete the fast-track rebuild of the damaged Moomba Gas Plant in central Australia. A section of the liquids recovery plant was damaged in an incident on January 1st. 25 Nov 04

Mr Tony Field, Santos Moomba LRP Project Manager said, "That the commissioning went as smoothly as it did is testament to the quality of the works carried out and the professionalism of the alliance workforce.  That this project was achieved without a single lost time injury in over 260 000 site man-hours worked is a fantastic effort, and demonstrates the safety culture pervading this alliance group."

Mr Steve Sandler, Chairman of the Executive Committee of O&G Solutions said, "The successful completion of the LRP Rebuild project, which performed well against all project measures, confirms O&G Solutions' importance as an alliance partner to Santos."

O&G Solutions has the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Santos. The joint venture responded immediately following the incident on January 1 2004  to assist in the restoration of Santos' oil and gas production capabilities.  In June, 70 per cent liquids recovery  was  achieved after the successful reinstatement of  process Train A.

The EPC Alliance personnel worked to establish a limited processing capability, enabling Santos to meet its supply commitments.  The focus then moved quickly to the rebuild effort, through well organised engineering, procurement and construction efforts the assessment, demolition and rebuilding of the fire affected areas was completed with excellence in safety and with high quality.

With both process Train-A commissioned in June and Train-B commissioned late August, the Moomba plant is again operating in full liquids recovery mode for the extraction of natural gas liquids such as LPGs and ethane.
